FAQ: PEOPLE OF COLO(U)R DESTROY SCIENCE FICTION!
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

I have a question about this project. Who should I address it to?

If you have a question, feel free to email us at [email protected] to send us a message. Email’s a little easier for us than using the Kickstarter messaging system, but either works! Questions about the Kickstarter, the rewards, or the writers’ guidelines are all welcome. Don’t by shy! Last updated: Mon, Jan 18 2016 11:12 am EST

Are any of the POC Destroy special issues already assembled?

No! They are all still very much TBD, so if you’re hoping to get the chance to write for those volumes, stay tuned for more information. In fact, basically no material has been acquired for any of the volumes as of yet. We didn’t want to count our chickens before they hatched and all that! POC Destroy Science Fiction! is open to submissions from writers now. Visit http://submissions.johnjosephadams.com/poc-destroy-sf/submit/ to read the guidelines and to submit a story. Submissions will close at the same time as the Kickstarter campaign, February 19. Stayed tuned for future updates. We’ll announce a submissions period for the Destroy Fantasy! and Destroy Horror! volumes, assuming the stretch goals are unlocked. Last updated: Mon, Jan 18 2016 11:15 am EST

Why use the term “People of Colo(u)r” for this project?

According to snopes.com, roughly 70% of the people on this planet are non-white. Lumping the majority of the world’s human population under the minority term “people of colour” is, frankly, dodgy. Author Vajra Chandrasekera calls it “plain old regular essentialism” (Chandrasekera’s discussion of essentialism, strategic and otherwise, is here: http://vajra.me/2015/04/15/margin). “People of colour” is a complicated but sometimes useful term that has most currency in North America, where it can be understood to mean, more or less, “People who experience systemic oppression, in their home countries or elsewhere, by virtue of all or part of their apparent racial and/or ethnic genetic heritages.” Yes, words are complicated. That’s what’s delightful about them. We can deal with complication. Science fiction — in itself a term that should be frequently re-examined — is an excellent artistic tool for dismantling essentialist thinking. For the purposes of this special edition of Lightspeed Magazine, the Guest Editors — Kristine Ong Muslim and Nalo Hopkinson — consider the terms “people of colour” and “science fiction” themselves to be conditional, contextual, provocative, strategic, and ripe for dismantling. Please understand our use of those two terms in that spirit. We’re looking for science fiction short stories of up to 10,000 words, reflective of the issue’s theme, written by writers of colour. Note that we will not be asking writers who submit stories to tell us what makes them “people of colour.” We leave that up to your world experience, your conscience, your sense of community, and your sense of fair play. As with the special “Destroy” issues of Lightspeed Magazine that have preceded it, the POC Destroy Science Fiction! issue will be contentious. That is, after all, part of its aim. Not the unconsidered splattershot of “equal opportunity” offensiveness — whatever the hell that is when not everyone has the same opportunities — but, we hope, one venue for the continuing and wonderfully productive discussions of access that are currently happening in this community. How do I choose to add an “Add-On” reward to my pledge?

To add an “Add-On” reward, do the following: 1. Choose one of our regular rewards as your “primary” reward and pledge as usual. 2. After making your initial pledge, click the “manage your pledge” button on our project’s page after you make your initial pledge. 3. Increase your pledge by the amount needed to claim the add-on(s). 4. Save your pledge. Do not change the tier that you originally pledged at. For example, if you want to pledge at the DESTROY PRINT level but you also want a 2-year subscription to LIGHTSPEED, you would pledge $23 normally, then click “manage your pledge” to increase your pledge by $67 for the two-year subscription. After the campaign is over, we’ll send out a questionnaire via Backerkit that will allow you to then specify the add-on rewards you want. You can see a list of the add-ons we have available above the “Risks and challenges” section, or you can see the full list at http://www.destroysf.com/poc-destroy-rewards. BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
